Next Practice, Best Practice forum

February 1, 2018

Jean (PI) and Mel (CoI) recently participated in the‚Next Practice, Best Practice‘ Forum: Working with a family when a parent has a mental illness‘ in Melbourne Australia.

They presented the Village project to an audience of researchers, clinicians, and people with lived experiences. Their session included ‚research snapshots‘ from Australia and around the world. Mel also presented preliminary findings from her large ‚Let’s Talk‘ project through Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. International speaker, Prof Giovanni de Girolamo spoke about the rates of transgenerational impacts for children when their parents have a mental illness. Dr Nick Kowalenko prompted us to think about the key things we should consider (as healthcare providers) to support children of parents who have a mental illness. We learned more about Victoria’s FaPMI initiative – a service development strategy responding to the acknowledgement oft he familial impact of mental illness. An important element of this forum was the inclusion of ‚experts by experience‘, parents with a mental illness who had been involved in the ‚Let’s Talk‘ reserach project.
