Jean and Dr Raphaela Kaisler (research and relationship manager) attended the International Congress on Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions in Prague, Czech Republic. The conference started with children at the centre – with performances from the Czech youth ballet and local host arriving on stage by scooter. The topic of parental mental illness and its impact on children featured heavily being the topic of several sessions. International experts in family focused mental healthcare discussed their experiences and perspectives regarding changing and supporting practice. Another session focused on issues regarding family communication and stigma when there is a mental illness within the family. We presented our study protocol in a session with speakers from the COMPARE project and a Dutch study which is also focused on improving outcomes for children when their parents have a mental illness. The project prompted useful discussions and fellow attendees seemed enthusiastic about our approach to placing the child at the centre and understanding their needs, while also creating opportunities for local stakeholders to co-design the practice approaches with us.
