Learning and sharing research topics at the European Psychiatry Association, Epidemiology and Social Psychiatry conference

Our PI, Jean, attended the European Psychiatry Association (EPA) Section of Epidemiology and Social Psychiatry conference recently. During introductions from local host, Prof Johannes Wancata, we were informed the conference venue was within the second largest hospital in the world – Vienna General Hospital (Allgemeines Krankenhaus, AKH). The Section chair, Prof Arnstein Mykletun, was impressed with the attendance and submitted abstracts – he described this conference as a ‚talking conference‘ where most attendees had either a poster or talk to present, resulting in a truly engaged group of delegates. LBG was well represented with DOT PI, Beate Schrank and CoI Marija Mitic attending and presenting a poster.  After a full day with plenaries covering topics such as childhood cognition and long-term antecedents, assessment of adults with ADHD, and relationship between mental health and work, we were treated to an impressive welcome reception at the Vienna Town Hall (Rathaus). Our talk was in a session about children’s mental illness and included topics such as transgenerational transmission of mental illness, and impacts of peers to encourage or discourage positive social behaviour. A final session on Saturday explored topics such as using implementation science to support the successful adoption of a communication and self-education tool to help children with ADHD and an example of employing people with lived-experience within the research team to co-design mental health projects.
